Many people ask me how I remain positive when there is so much negativity in the world, especially when part of my job is spending much of my day listening to people’s problems and complaints. People wonder how I keep a positive perspective and energy so I wanted to share with you some of the highlights of the power of positivity.

Positivity is all about where you choose to focus your thoughts. Many people have programmed their minds to just search for what is wrong in their life, what is negative. Whether it’s what is negative about themselves, their spouse, or their situation, they are always complaining and they only see negativity. They become a magnet for negativity. They walk into a room and they pick up on everything that is wrong with the people, with the environment, with the community.

However, you can choose to focus on positivity instead. You can ask yourself “What is good about this person?” Yes, a lot of people may have negative qualities and traits, something about them that annoys you, but you can even learn from that. There’s a Persian proverb that says “You learn etiquette, from the ill-mannered.” Following this, when someone acts badly when someone is rude, or there is bad conduct or bad character in some way, you can take this as an example of what not to do and how to think positively.

We are inspired by people who are good and those that have beautiful characters, but we can also learn from individuals who have less desirable traits. You can choose to act differently from them. You don’t have to be phony, you don’t have to be a gossip or consume yourself with tearing other people down.

You don’t have to have anything to do with these negative behaviors. Turn your focus to finding what is good about yourself and your situation. You have to recognize your good and choose positivity to be able to be motivated to do things. If you’re down on yourself, you’re not going to be able to have a positive impact on others or your community. Search for the goodness within you. Then, search for it in your family members, your spouse, your children, and your situation.

Focus on the positive, all that is good because everything that is happening in your life has benefits. Allah has put you in this situation, as difficult, painful, or sad it might be, it is happening to you for a reason. When you believe that, with all certainty, everything happens and there is wisdom behind it, you’ll be able to view the situation differently.

You’re not going to complain or be sad about it, you’re going to have a sense of gratitude. You’re going to say (Arabic) as you mean it. You’ll be humble and it will show in your face, in your body, and in the way that you behave. Gratitude won’t just be a word that you utter, it will show in your behavior, your character, and how you deal with the difficulties of life.

I encourage you to have that positive thinking in life and to always search for what’s good. Realize that your attitude is a choice. You choose to either be miserable or you choose to turn things around.
