The hard work and unpredictability that make parenting so rewarding can also cause a great deal of anxiety. Here are some simple ways to take control of your emotions and find the peace you are looking for.
Write a To-Do List
Most parents have a long list of concerns that may lead to a lot of stress. You can clear your mind and stop ruminating by merely writing them down. Start by putting everything you’re worried about on your smartphone or in a notebook. As you write them, just imagine eliminating the worry associated with the task as you move it from your head to the task list.
Mind Your Language
Most parents believe things will simply get better as their kids grow up. The truth is, anxiety will continue until you change your thought patterns. Watch the vocabulary you choose to describe things. Don’t use phrases like, “It’s going to be a disaster if it’s not done on time,” or, “I’m just going to die of shame if I forget.”
Get Out of The House
There’s nothing like getting some sunlight in the fresh, crisp air to ease your anxiety, put your baby in a stroller, and go out for a walk. You’ll feel better even if it’s around the block or to the neighborhood park. You can also take the kids to an outdoor mall or sit down in an ice cream shop’s patio and share a dessert. Some bookstores may have an outdoor seating area where you can spend some quality time reading to your kids.
Use Belly Breathing Exercises
Sometimes anxiety can be a challenge to control, and deep breathing is one of the best tools to find calm. So the next time you feel stressed or overwhelmed by anxiety, try this simple breathing exercise:
- Get in a comfortable position, standing, sitting, or lying down.
- Take a deep breath through your nose, inhale slowly. You should feel like your belly is expanding, then your chest should rise as you fill your lungs with air.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth, allowing your lungs to deflate naturally.
- Repeat for at least 10 to 20 times up to 2 minutes
You may perform this exercise whenever you feel stressed out and as often as you need help to stay calm or if you feel anxious or worried.
Reach Out To Others
Call your friends or relatives to talk or ask for advice. It may also benefit you to join a Facebook parenting group or some other parenting support group. Just remember not to overburden your friends or family.
If you feel your anxiety is affecting your happiness, effectiveness as a parent, or any other aspect of your life. It is definitely time to talk to a professional who is trained to help.
